Western Iowa Tech links with University of Iowa

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa has partners with Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City and Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids to bring its course work to the community college campuses in fall 2009.

Graduates who have earned associate of science or associate of applied science or associate of arts degrees may take two UI classes during the fall and spring semesters.

Western Iowa Tech and Kirkwood are the third and fourth Iowa community colleges that the University of Iowa has teamed up with to make courses available on local campuses.

'Veterinary Camp' set July 14 in Sioux Center

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association will conduct a "Veterinary Camp'' on July 14 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. on the Sioux County fairgrounds in Sioux Center.

The camp is focused on educating students between the ages of 14 and 17 with the goal of sparking interest in veterinary medicine. Vet Camp will have three stations involving proper injection sites and techniques, First Aid and care of small animals bandaging, basic physical examination skills and more.

Local veterinarians along with veterinary technicians and veterinary students will help teach.

Publication offers tips on buying local beef, pork

AMES, Iowa -- Consumers interested in buying local beef or pork will want to take a look at a new publication created by the Iowa State University's Small Meat Processors' Working Group.

Funded in part by a SARE grant, "Beef and Pork Whole Animal Buying Guide" explains buying pork and beef as whole animals (or portions thereof) from local producers.

The publication explains marketing terms, information on storage and handling, meat inspection, meat cut-out weight, and includes color photos of common retail beef and pork cuts by primal. This guide brings all the necessary pieces together in one easy-to-use resource.

St. Ansgar finishes second in ag mechanics event

ST. ANSGAR, Iowa -- The St. Ansgar FFA Chapter was the Reserve Champion Team in the Iowa FFA Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event held recently at Iowa State University. Team members are Garrett Barker, Chris Jahr and Jackson Hertel. Their ag education instructor is Andy Johnson.

The Keota FFA Chapter at Keota was the champion team. Derek Feuss from the Midland FFA Chapter at Wyoming, was named the High Individual Overall in the competition.

FFA teams from 36 chapters participated in this year's Career Development Event designed to provide the student an opportunity to display their agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of Ag Mechanics.

Research farm field day is June 25

KANAWHA, Iowa -- The annual spring field day will be held June 25 at the Iowa State University Research Farm near Kanawha.

The farm is located on the south edge of Kanawha on County Road R-35.

Coffee, juice and rolls will be served at 9 a.m., and the tours begin at 9:30 a.m. Tour stops include corn planting dates, new developments in soybean aphid management, new soybean traits and yield improvement, and local crop problems. Lunch will be served at the conclusion of the field day.

Roger Elmore, ISU Extension corn specialist, has been researching both corn planting dates and optimum plant populations. He will discuss the results of his research and provide updated corn planting recommendations. Erin Hodgson, ISU Extension entomologist, will discuss the effectiveness of aphid resistance soybean varieties and the initial results from a predatory wasp release in protecting soybean yields.

U.S. Pork Center updates its Web site

AMES, Iowa -- The U.S. Pork Center of Excellence has updated the Pork Information Gateway to create a more user-friendly Web site.

The updates feature a new site design and a home page featuring up-to-date pork headlines that can be seen at http://isu.porkgateway.org.

"The U.S. Pork Center of Excellence and all its partners are always looking for ways to improve collaboration and communication,'' said David Meisinger, executive director. "We wanted to make it more modern in its appeal, more user-friendly in its application and more complete in its content.''

The U.S. Pork Industry Center was established in 2005 as a public/private partnership to bring together academic expertise in research, teaching and Extension related to pork production.

Vilsack aide nominated to serve on energy panel

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama has nominated a longtime aide to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to serve on the federal board overseeing the nation's energy sector.

John Norris, who currently serves as Vilsack's chief of staff at the Agriculture Department, was nominated by the White House to serve on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Norris worked as Vilsack's chief of staff when Vilsack served as Iowa's governor. Norris was also a top aide to Iowa Rep. Leonard Boswell. Norris previously served as chairman of the Iowa Utilities Board from 2005 to 2009.

ISU team wins Hoard's Dairyman cow judging contest

AMES, Iowa -- An Iowa State University dairy judging team, coached by Lee Kilmer, won the college division of the 79th Hoard's Dairyman Cow Judging Contest.

The team scored 458.8 out of 500 to edge out a team from Ohio. Members of the team were Missey Tegtmeyer, Erin Hanson, Jess Kenefick, Ashley Christensen, Jennifer Mormann, Pete Schultz, Ross Reynolds, Zach Deutmeyer, Henry Nolte and Mike Roling.

The team received a $100 cash prize.

Photo contest is seeking contest entrees

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is accepting entries for the 2009 Capture the Heart of America Photo Contest. The contest, which runs through Sept. 18, seeks to capture the unique culture and heritage of the region.

Photos submitted must be taken within the 37-county Heritage Area, with entries accepted in the following categories: Events/Festivals, Farm Life, Heritage Area Sites, Images of the Past (pre-1950s) and Scenic. Awards will be given in each category for first, second and third place, as well as best of show. Select photos will be considered for publication in the SSNHA Visitor Guide.
