Field Day set June 30 near Sutherland

SUTHERLAND, Iowa -- The Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Sutherland will host an Iowa State University Farm Field Day June 30.

The event will begin at 9 a.m.

Program topics will include auto-steer technology, fungicides, a weather update, corn management and plant populations.

St. Ansgar barbecuer takes first in pork shoulder

Newstrom earns Grand Champion honors

DES MOINES -- Ryan Newstrom of the Big T'z Q Cru from Ames earned Grand Champion honors June 6 in the Pork Checkoff's 22nd annual Great Pork BarbeQlossal contest.

Newstrom was awarded cash and prizes worth $8,000.

Randy Twyford of Twyford's BBQ & Catering from Jacksonville, Ill., earned Champion honors of the Whole Hog category.

Joe Rosenberg of St. Ansgar won $1,000 for first place in the shoulder category.

Fifty-nine teams from 11 states competed in the annual pork barbecue contest held at the conclusion of the World Pork Expo.

Woodworkers Workshop is June 24 in Spencer

SPENCER, Iowa -- A Beginning Woodworkers Workshop will be held June 24 from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the Clay County Extension office in Spencer.

The workshop is for youth in grades 3-12.

Participants will learn woodworking basics and will also be able to construct their own picnic napkin holder. The cost is $5, which includes supplies, take-home materials and a snack.

Lantzkys earn National Dairy Shrine honor

HAWKEYE, Iowa -- Brian and Heidi Lantzky of Hawkeye were selected as National Dairy Shrine Progressive Dairy Producers.

This award is a $2,000 travel stipend to attend a conference or seminar to learn new techniques to improve their business.

The Latzkey's have an excellent Jersey herd of 165 cows and are very involved in the dairy community.

The Latzkeys and other National Dairy Shrine honorees will be recognized at the annual banquet in Madison, Wis., on Oct. 1.

Iowa entities get $4.7 million in disaster help

WASHINGTON -- Agriculture Under Secretary for Rural Development Dallas Tonsager announced the selection of 49 rural businesses, communities and rural public entities to receive $4.7 million to assist in disaster relief efforts. The funds will go to presidentially-declared disaster areas affected by floods and tornadoes.

Poweshiek Iowa Development received $99,000, the Howard County Board of Supervisors received $99,900 and Southwestern Community College received $49,910.

The funding is being provided under the Rural Business Enterprise Grant program. Rural public entities, Indian tribes and rural private non-profit corporations are eligible to apply for funding.

Judge denies motion to move Agriprocessors trial

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A federal judge has again denied a request to move the trial of former kosher slaughterhouse executive Sholom Rubashkin out of Iowa.

U.S. District Court Judge Linda Reade rejected the motion by defense attorneys, but suggested that she could change her mind as the Sept. 8 trial date nears. Reade issued a similar ruling in March, but allowed defense lawyers to renew their request after prosecutors filed new charges against Rubashkin.

Rubashkin is one of several employees of Agriprocessors Inc. named in a 142-count federal indictment for alleged bank fraud, harboring undocumented workers for profit, document fraud and other crimes. Rubashkin has pleaded not guilty.

Report: 1967 study predicted large Iowa flood

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A published report says a 1967 Army Corps of Engineers study foresaw a flood with dimensions nearly equal to those of last year's flood in Iowa.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette says the Army Corps report estimated that the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids would crest about 12 feet higher than a 1961 flood. The prediction was right on: The 2008 crest of nearly 31 feet was about 11 feet higher than the roughly 20-foot crest of 1961. Officials called for the 1967 Corps study after a 1965 Mississippi River flood.

Crawfordsville farm hosting field day June 24

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Iowa -- The Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Crawfordsville will have a field day on June 24. The event begins with a noon lunch for $5.

The program, which starts at 1 p.m., will include a season review; monitoring yield data for the Average Crop Revenue Election Program; cover crops for soil conservation; corn and soybean fungicides; and organic crop opportunities.
