Northwest Research farm's field day is June 25

SUTHERLAND, Iowa -- The Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm's Field Day will be held June 25 at 9 a.m. near Sutherland.

Topics will include livestock and grain marketing, weed management, a growing season update, fertility and liming issues.

The farm is located 11 miles north of Cherokee on U.S. Highway 59 and a one-quarter mile east on County Road B62.

Food prize foundation receives $250,000 donation

DES MOINES -- The World Food Prize Foundation's effort to restore the former downtown Des Moines Public Library has received a $250,000 boost from the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation.

The Greater Des Moines Community Foundation announced last week it is giving $250,000 to fund a world map at the new public gardens that will accompany the World Food Prize Foundation's facility.

The public gardens are a part of the World Food Prize Foundations plans for the former library which will contain the Norman E. Borlaug Hall of Laureates. The Hall is scheduled for completion in 2010.

Culver appoints new member to EPC Board

DES MOINES -- Gov. Chet Culver has appointed a Cedar Rapids man to the state's Environmental Protection Commission.

Martin Stimson is the manager of all manufacturing engineering operations for Clipper Windpower in Cedar Rapids.

Culver says Stimson will make a great addition to the EPC. He says Stimson has three decades of experience in manufacturing and management.

Field day is planned near Crawfordsville June 26

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Iowa -- The Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm field day is planned June 26 at 10:30 a.m..

Topics that will be covered include new corn herbicides, a crop season outlook and tilling research. A speech will be given on food vs. fuel.''

From Crawfordsville, the farm is located 1.75 miles south, 2 miles east on G62 and three-quarters of a mile north on the Washington/Louisa County-line road.

Sales tax rate moves from 5 percent to 6

DES MOINES -- The state sales tax rate will increase from 5 percent to 6 percent on July 1. The School Local Option Sales Tax will no longer exist on that date and will be replaced by the 1 percent sales tax increase.

Somes sales and services taxes will remain at 5 percent. Businesses making these sales will complete an additional schedule when filing their tax returns.

The state rate for hotel and motel lodging will stay at 5 percent. Certain construction equipment sold to contractors and the short-term auto rental rate also remain at 5 percent.

Marshall County considers plastic bag ban

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- Plastic bags may be a thing of the past in parts of rural Marshall County.

County supervisors are considering a proposed ordinance to ban plastic bags for shopping. Part of the discussion includes using only biodegradable bags or recycled bags.

Supervisor Patrick Brooks says he got the idea from watching a documentary on fish in Africa that were dying. Researchers determined the fish had eaten small pieces of plastic.

Supervisors talked about the issue last week and heard from several people -- and most said they favored the idea.

300 sentenced after immigration raid

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- U.S. Attorney Matt Dummermuth says 300 of the 389 people who were detained after an immigration raid at the Agriprocessors meat packing plant in Postville have now pleaded guilty and been sentenced on federal felony charges.

Dummermuth says the number of convictions makes it the largest criminal worksite enforcement operation in U.S. history.

Dummermuth says more people detained may yet be convicted.

Dairyland Super National Pull is June 20-22

TOMAH, Wis. -- The Budweiser Wisconsin Dairyland Super National Pull is scheduled June 20-22 in Tomah.

The pull will be held in Recreation Park. It is expected to attract more than 75,000 spectators and will showcase the top stars in the National Tractor Pullers Association.

Competitors will travel from across the United States and Canada to compete.

In addition to pulls, visitors will be able to enjoy arts and crafts booths, flea markets, commercial booths and exhibits located on the Monroe County fairgrounds.
