EYOTA, Minn. -- Dave Twernbold, owner of Leprechaun Lawn Care, can't stand to sit around all winter.

That's why he and his wife, Carol, didn't hesitate to buy their restaurant, Country Cafe, in Eyota when they saw it for sale.

The couple met while working in Perkins restaurants in nearby Rochester. Dave was kitchen manager for 23 years and Carol did the books. That experience gave them the confidence and skills to jump into their second family business almost three years ago.

"It's been fabulous," said Dave, who does some cooking at Country Cafe. He would like to expand or start a second location in Chatfield.

Their menu, influenced by their days at Perkins, includes breakfast, lunch, appetizers, dinner and dessert. Breakfast is served any time.

"(Customers) get a ton of food for a reasonable price," said Dave.

Their salads and pitas -- served with french fries, soup or salad -- are popular in the summer. Carol likes the teriyaki chicken pita, $6.50, which also may be ordered in salad form for $7. Other lunches include burgers, sandwiches, baskets, chili or soup.

Dinner entrees like the filet mignon or ribeye steak and shrimp come with a choice of potato, choice of vegetable and salad bar. A kids' menu is available or children can get discounted prices on the salad bar or Friday night special. For dessert, customers have their pick of pies, cakes, shakes, sundaes or a Root Beer float. A seasonal, homemade strawberry pie is a new option. Any of their food may be ordered as take-out.

"We have a wide variety," Carol said. "We like to make everyone happy."

The year-round all-you-can-eat fish buffet on Fridays is a hit with fried or grilled fish, ribs, fried chicken, meatballs, choice of potato and salad bar for $11.99. On Mondays, customers can get two pork chops for $9.99, Tuesdays bring ham and cheese omelettes for $5.49, on Wednesday it's the all-you-can-eat fried chicken for $9.99 and Thursday is all-you-can-eat BBQ ribs for $10.99. Saturday offers steak and shrimp for $14.99 and Sunday is all-you-can-eat fried or grilled shrimp for $13.99.

The Twernbolds remodeled the restaurant, putting in new tile floors, windows, kitchen appliances and a mint green color on the walls. They increased their seating capacity to 90 people.

"It's made a big difference," Carol said.

They pride themselves on cleanliness and service. Customers may substitute any side order for another at no extra charge.

"We don't skimp on anything and we try to keep the prices reasonable," said Carol.

She credits the restaurant's dependable 10 employees for making their two-company lifestyle possible. Their daughters, Amanda Gross and Amber Twernbold, work there and cook Andrew Peterson has been a big help. Their son, Brandon Twernbold, helps with their lawn care service.
