Iowa State Fair offers something new

Tuesday, August 8, 2006

Jean Caspers-Simmet

Agri News staff writer

DES MOINES -- New to this year's fair are Draft Horse and Mule Farm Team Competitions beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 16. Classes include farm hitch obstacle; log skidding; antique machinery or vehicle (hitched); barnyard horse pull; cultivator competition and carriage turnout.

There will also be an expanded draft horse schedule. Spreading the shows over seven days will allow for more horses and more shows.

"This allows more stalling for more horses since they are not all here at once," said Chappell. "In previous years the fair has featured three hitch classes, this year there are six. The fair is very proud that the Clydesdale show has been upgraded to an "A" All American Qualifying Show from a "B." The decision to upgrade the show is not requested or applied for but is awarded based on number of entries and the quality of show."

The Iowa Beef Quarters will be unveiling its new "Hot Beef Sundae" at this year's fair, Chappell said. The meaty treat includes a bowl of shredded beef, topped with a scoop of mashed potatoes drizzled with gravy and topped with shredded cheese and a cherry tomato.

Kids looking for a new adventure will want to join Blue Ribbon Kids, the Fair's new -- and free --club just for kids ages 10 and under, Chappell said.

During the fair, Kids' Club members will have the opportunity to participate in four fun-filled activities. All events start at 10 a.m. and last 30 to 60 minutes.

Aug. 10 children will participate in opening ceremonies at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater. Aug. 14 there is a draft and miniature horse demonstration at Penningroth Media Center in the Cattle Barn). Aug. 17 is sheep shearing at Penningroth Media Center in the Cattle Barn. Aug. 20 is breakfast with Fairfield and Rosetta at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater. Pre-registration is required for the breakfast event.

Blue Ribbon Kids is free to join. Members can sign up at Little Hands on the Farm or print the membership form from iowastatefair.org and bring it to their first event. Children must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver before participating in any Kids' Club activity. Those signing up at the event are encouraged to show up at least 15-20 minutes early.
