Sheehan family farm will host field day June 19

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The Robert and Jeanette Sheehan family farm is the location for a June 19 University of Minnesota Successful Dairy Systems Field Day. The event will run from 10 a.m.-noon.

The dairy herd consistse of about 65 registered Holsteins that had a rolling herd average of 27,868 pounds of milk in 2007.

The family constructed a curtain-sided, clear-post framed ag building in 2007 for replacement heifer calves up to four months of age. A shed constructed in 1991 has six bays and is used for calves that are in transition at four months to six months of age.

Field day participants will also have the opportunity to travel to another Sheehan farm to see an older tie-stall barn remodeled into a facility for calves from birth to 2 months of age.

Holstein Association State Shows are June 20-21

SAUK CENTRE, Minn. -- The annual Minnesota Holstein Association and Minnesota Junior Holstein Association State Shows will be held June 20-21 on the Stearns County fairgrounds in Sauk Centre.

The event will be hosted by the Stearns County Holstein Association.

The Junior Holstein Show begins at 9:30 a.m. on June 20. Peter Coyle from Spring Valley, Wis., will be the show judge. The junior show will start with cow classes and continue with heifer classes in the afternoon. Membership in the Junior Holstein Association is required and participants must be 21 years old or younger.

The Minnesota Holstein State Show begins at 5 p.m. with the bull and dry cow classes. The show continues at 8 a.m. June 21 with heifer and cow classes. Justin Burdette, a registered Holstein breeder from Mercersburg, Pa.l, will judge the 26 classes of Holsteins.

About 300 registered Holsteins are expected to participate in the shows. For more information, contact the Holstein Association at (320) 259-0637.

Extension offers help to flood, storm victims

ST. PAUL -- The Extension Service is offering its coordinated system of online and telephone answer resources to people with flood and storm-related questions -- both during an emergency and while cleanup efforts are under way.

The Farm Information Line at 1-800-232-9077 is staffed by Extension personnel Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and is a resource for questions about water, crops, horticulture and climatology issues. Extension's AnswerLine at 1-800-854-1678 can provide answers to household and family-orientated questions, is staffed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Breakfast on the Farm is June 28

EYOTA, Minn. -- Breakfast on the Farm is scheduled June 28 on the Charles and Carrie Sachs' dairy operation near Eyota.

Breakfast will be served from 6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

"Chris Cakes'' will be served along with sausage, milk, juice, coffee and cheese. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12. Younger children can eat for free.

Horse-drawn wagon rides, a petting zoo, educational displays and exhibits will be part of the day's activities.

Dairy Systems field day near Spring Grove

SPRING GROVE, Minn. -- A University of Minnesota Successful Dairy Systems Field Day is planned July 1 from 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m at the DeSu Holsteins dairy heifer replacement facilities near Spring Grove.

The farm is operated by the Dean and Sue Meyer family. The dairy herd consists of 1,200 Holstein cows. The herd has a rolling herd average of 30,600 pounds of milk.

However, the cows are housed on a separate farm in Iowa and won't be part of the program.

The field day will center on the family's new dairy heifer replacement facilities constructed last fall. The facilities include four, 250-head free-stall barns featuriing drive-by feeding and sand bedding. A tour of the barns will be conducted.

Dairyland Super National Pull is June 20-22

TOMAH, Wis. -- The Budweiser Wisconsin Dairyland Super National Pull is scheduled June 20-22 in Tomah.

The pull will be held in Recreation Park. It is expected to attract more than 75,000 spectators and will showcase the top stars in the National Tractor Pullers Association.

Competitors will travel from across the United States and Canada to compete.

In addition to pulls, visitors will be able to enjoy arts and crafts booths, flea markets, commercial booths and exhibits located on the Monroe County fairgrounds.

Fishing Festival planned in Whitewater June 27

ST. CHARLES, Minn. -- A Fishing Festival for children will be held June 27 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. in Whitewater State Park near St. Charles.

Children in grades 1-6 accompanied by an adult chaperone are invited to attend. Groups and clubs are welcome.

Participants will celebrate the role fish play in the history, foods, traditions and recreation of many cultures. Stations that will be setup at the event include fish netting and identification, fish storytelling and printing, cooking with fish and other water animals, and more.

Sesquicentennial recognition planned at fair

ST. CHARLES, Minn. -- Farms, businesses and public entities that have have existed for 150 years in Winona County will be recognized July 10 at the Winona County Fair.

Ceremonies will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Entertainment Tent.

Recognition forms are available at the County Recorder's office. Forms should be submitted by June 27.

State Fair entry deadlines are announced

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Minnesota State Fair competition entry deadlines have been announced.

The fair, which runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 1, will award more than $950,000 in cash to winners.

Deadlines for various competitions are: Fine Arts, July 14; Dairy Products, July 18; Horses, July 21; FFA Cattle, July 28; Open Class Cattle, July 28; Pigeons, July 30; Poultry, July 30; and Rabbits, July 30.

Other deadlines are FFA Swine, Aug. 4; FFA Sheep, Aug. 4; Open Class Swine, Aug. 4; Open Class Sheep, Aug. 4; Dairy Goats, Aug. 4; Llamas, Aug. 4; Creative Activities, Aug. 5; Education, Aug. 5; Christmas Trees, Aug. 6; and FFA Judging Contests, Aug. 8.
