Letter -- The view from Munchkinland

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

You've seen the Wizard of Oz.

You've seen Wicked (The Wicked Witch's Story).

Now: Really Wicked: The View from Munchkinland.

The Wizards of Oz determined that they wanted their fine Emerald City to become a "destination" for visitors. They envisioned a biosphere bubble over the city to protect it from outside evils. In their city there would be no undesirable birds (think crows, pigeons, starlings, Canada geese); no smoke from nasty tobacco; no rains, planes or automobiles; no cell phones; no fast food; and no medical waste incinerator. It would be perfect in every way.

Visitors would arrive approximately 8 miles to the south of the Emerald City and would approach following the Yellow Brick Road by walking or jogging, in-line skates or bicycle. Or they could be shuttled on the electric monorail powered by those lovely windmills dotting the countryside of Munchkinland with their blinking red lights penetrating the night sky.

With the bubble over the city, they would also be able to control the climate; no snow removal, no need to worry about (um) global warming or mini ice age, (or whatever).

There were a few details to be worked out. They still needed that polluting coal to create their "clean" steam heat for their buildings (if indeed heat would be needed). And they would still need trucks to haul their (shhh!) hazardous medical waste and sludge from their sewer plant out of Emerald City to Munchkinland.

But, gee, they could even revive the hot air balloon extravaganza they used to have (note to Wizards: Address height of bubble, need for light breeze)!

Meanwhile, out in Munchkinland, the Munchkins were in a dither. Not only do they have to contend with airplanes, medical waste incinerator, sewer sludge, windmills and blinking lights and provide labor for the Emerald City, now they were going to have their roads cut up and their land taken away!

The Wizards were going to reroute the trains running through Emerald City for 100 years (no surprise there) out to Munchkinland.

Now Munchkinland also is much different than it was 100 years ago. But when the Wizards look at Muchkinland, they see "nothing is out there." This is definitely not the case. And so, the Munchkins decided -- they would have to pay attention to the men behind the curtain: To be continued.
