Johnsons are Good Farm Neighbors for July

LINDSTROM, Minn. -- Ron and Sue Johnson of Lindstrom have been named Good Farm Neighbor Award winners for July.

The Johnsons have a Holstein dairy and farm 225 acres of row crops, small grains and alfalfa in southern Chisago County.

The Johnsons have made many conservation improvements and implemented conservation practices on their farm. They installed a vegetative filter strip along a neighboring lake that protects the body of water and provides wildlife habitat.

The Johnsons will monitor the lake's water quality for the next several years.

Good Farm Neighbor nominations can be mailed to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, 625 North Robert St., St. Paul, MN 55155.

LSP plans summer celebration July 20

CANTON, Minn. -- A hog roast and potluck dinner, an interactive farm tour and a beginning farmer graduation ceremony will be held July 20 during the Land Stewardship Project's annual summer celebration scheduled July 20.

The celebration will be on the Springside Farm near Canton. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. and run until 5:30 p.m.

The cost is $10 per person and $30 per family for LSP members. Non-members will pay $20 individually and $50 for families.

The Haugen family will lead a tour of their 230-acre grass-based farm consisting of rotationally-grazed pastures.

Participants are asked to bring a dish to share.

Pomerenke is interning at Minnesota Pork Board

OKABENA, Minn. -- Jenna Pomerenke of Okabena has joined the staff of the Minnesota Pork Board as a summer intern. Her parents are Dave and Brenda Pomerenke.

"I will be busy behind the wheel this summer, but I also look forward to working on a variety of other Pork Checkoff projects,'' Pomerenke said.

She has already attended the World Pork Expo in Des Moines. She is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota.

Environmental Partnership picks board members

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Environmental Partnership has elected two new board members.

The statewide coalition of more than 80 conservation and environmental organizations has selected Glen Hill, executive director of the Minnesota Food Association to the board along with Lea Schuster, executive director of Transit for Livable Communities.

Re-elected to the board were Martha Brand, with the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy; Marty Broan, Conservation Minnesota; and Bill Grant of the Izaak Walton League of America.

Jane Krentz also was appointed to the board. She is a former state senator.

Wind energy pioneer pleads guilty to mail fraud

MINNEAPOLIS -- A Minnesota wind-power entrepreneur has pleaded guilty to mail fraud in a case that accused him of bilking Xcel Energy of up to $400,000.

Greg Jaunich's plea came last week in U.S. District Court. The 47-year-old faces up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Jaunich, who managed Northern Alternative Energy-Shaokatan Power Partners, sent Xcel inflated estimated bills from 2003 to 2004. According to court documents, Jaunich told employees to bill Xcel even when he knew one of the wind turbines wasn't up and operating for a time.

MDA awards $150,000 in grants to farmers

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has awarded $150,000 in Sustainable Agriculture grants for 10 on-farm research and demonstration projects.

The grants support three-year projects that increase net farm profits, benefit the environment and improve family farmers' quality of life.

Grant money was awarded to Michael Hamp, Wadena County; Dallas Flynn, Ottertail County; Kelly Smith, Carlton County; Al Ringer, St. Louis County; Sam Kedem, Dakota County; Koua Vang and Cingie Kong, Chisago County; Jeff Duchene, Fillmore County; Jerry Tourtillot, Roseau County; Ryon Walker, Itasca and Carlton counties; and Joe Bowman and Michelle Gransee-Bowman, Scott County.

Mystery Day Camp planned in Jackson County

LAKEFIELD, Minn. -- A countywide Day Camp will be presented by the Jackson County 4-H Ambassadors July 11. The camp, for youth in kindergarten through 3rd grade, will be held at Sandy Point Park near Lakefield.

In case of rain, the camp will be held in the Immanuel Activity Center.

The mystery-based camp will run from noon-5 p.m. and children should eat lunch before they arrive.

The cost is $5 and transportation can be provided, if needed.
