Howard County students honored with awards
CRESCO, Iowa -- Karn Anderson and Maddi Friedrich have been awarded the national "I Dare You Leadership Award" in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership.
The honor was presented by the Howard County 4-H & Youth Committee at their award ceremonies held at the Howard County Expo on Nov. 9.
The award is presented annually by the American Youth Foundation in cooperation with principals, counselors, county 4-H agents, church groups and other organizations across the country.
Noninsured Crop Disaster program deadline nears
WATERLOO, Iowa -- Farmers are reminded the application deadline to apply for coverage under FSA's Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program for many crops is Dec. 1.
The Dec. 1 NAP application deadline date applies to coverage for all fall-seeded crops and perennial crops, such as: alfalfa, winter wheat, apples, grasses, various fruits and vegetables, and ornamental nursery crops. The application closing dates for these crops was extended to December 1 for the 2009 crop year only, with the exception of honey which typically has a Dec. 1 closing date.
Although the NAP application closing date was extended, the coverage period definition hasn't changed. NAP coverage won't begin until the later of 30 days after the NAP application is filed or the date the crop is planted, as long as it is before our established final planting date.
Shearer to join faculty at Iowa State
AMES, Iowa --Jan Shearer, an international leader in dairy production medicine and Extension will join the faculty at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009.
Shearer has been a full professor at the University of Florida since 2001.
Shearer has authored more than 200 publications in scientific proceedings, at least 12 chapters in textbooks, published over 42 peer-reviewed publications on a wide variety of dairy and beef health topics, and given approximately 375 presentations at state, national and international meetings since 2000.
Landowner seeks to stop hog lots in Dallas County
DES MOINES -- An Iowa City man is going to court to try and stop construction of two hog lots in central Iowa.
Robert Burchfield owns land next to the proposed sites near Dawson in Dallas County.
He has asked a Polk County judge to reject permits granted by state regulators, citing concerns about manure runoff and the effect on land values.
The confinements will have room for 15,000 hogs.
Hog farmer Robert Manning Jr. plans to use the manure to fertilize some of his farm fields.
Manning's attorney claims Burchfield doesn't have legal standing to intervene in the case and has failed to show how agreed-upon safeguards will not protect his land.
Quality Tested Hay sales in Caledonia
CALEDONIA, Minn. -- The Houston County Forage and Grassland Council has completed planning for its 13th year of sponsoring a Quality Tested Hay Sale.
Hay auctions will be held the second Friday of each month on Dec. 12, Jan. 9, Feb. 13 and March 13.
Sales will be held at Green Power Equipment in Caledonia. Sales will start at 1 p.m.
All lots of hay must be registered and tested between 9 a.m. and noon on the Thursday prior to the sale. Straw lots can be registered on Friday's from 11 a.m.-noon.
All hay to be sold must be tested using the same forage testing lab. The sale committee will collect samples for analysis on the day before the sale with results posted on sale day.
Sellers may set a base bid to start the sale of their lots. A listing fee of $5 per load of hay or straw, plus $12 per lot of hay for lab testing.
Trial rescheduled for Agriprocessors worker
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Trial has been rescheduled for next year for a human resources employee charged with helping illegal workers use false documents to work at the Agriprocessors Inc. plant in Postville.
Karina Freund of Fayette was arrested in September by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and charged with harboring illegal immigrants.
Her arrest followed a massive federal raid at the Agriprocessors plant on May 12, during which 389 people were arrested.
Freund's trial was supposed to have started Monday, but is now rescheduled for Jan. 20.
She is also among five Agriprocessors officials who have pleaded not guilty to thousands of charges of violating Iowa's child labor laws.
Two stray mules are sold at auction
PRIMGHAR, Iowa -- Two mule-like animals found wandering in O'Brien County have been sold for $40 for the pair.
The animals were found on Oct. 14 near the Primghar County Club. Officials with the O'Brien County sheriff's office say that no one stepped forward to claim them so they were sold Tuesday at a sheriff's auction to Darin Logan of Primghar.
Deputies believe the animals are a horse-donkey combination called a hinny.
Iowa Senate GOP oust leader after election losses
DES MOINES -- Two weeks after another election loss, Republicans in the Iowa Senate last week ousted their party leader.
Republicans voted to replace Senate Minority Leader Ron Wieck with Sen. Paul McKinley, a Chariton lawmaker first elected in 2000.
The move came after Republicans lost two more Senate seats in the Nov. 4 election, leaving Democrats firmly in control with a 32-18 margin. McKinley was elected after a private meeting of Senate Republicans and then met with reporters.
"One way to look at that is the direction is up," said McKinley. "We certainly will be recruiting quality candidates, We are going to rebuild the party from the ground up."
Iowa bishops approve resolution on Postville
The board of the Iowa Catholic Conference approved a resolution calling on Iowa Catholics to reflect on whether the immigration raid in Postville was consistent with American democracy and rendering of justice.
In addition the bishops asked Catholics to support reform of the federal immigration system.
During its recent board meeting, the Iowa Catholic Conference also approved its 2009 legislative agenda, which can be found at www.iowacatholicconference.org.
The Iowa Catholic Conference is the public policy organization of the Catholic Church in Iowa. Its Board of Directors includes the bishops of Iowa and lay people, priests, a deacon and religious sisters.
