Mowing ditches hurts bird population

The season for mowing roadside ditches has arrived and that means a percentage of pheasant nests and hens will be lost, says Emily Hutchins, Department of Natural Resources private lands specialist.

"The extent of the loss can be limited, however, if landowners will reconsider their decision to mow roadside ditches, or at least delay the mowing,'' said Hutchins.

Roadsides are important and productive nesting sites for more than 40 kinds of birds and animals.

"It's safe to say that thousands of nest sites are destroyed every spring and summer due to mowing and other disturbances. As wildlife habitat becomes even more fragmented and continues to disappear, roadsides are playing an increasingly important role for producing wildlife.''
