Revier Cattle Co. is Good Farm Neighbor

OLIVIA, Minn. -- Revier Cattle Company of Olivia has been named the July winner of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Good Farm Neighbor Award.

Tom Revier and seven full-time employees raise about 4,500 head of cattle. The operation also includes crops, was started by the Revier family in the early 1900s.

The MDA Good Farm Neighbor Award honors farmers who show concern for their neighbors, their animals and the environment.

Tom Revier says livestock production helps protect the environment.

"Livestock provides manure full of nutrients for crops that reduce the need for potash mines and manufacturing of nitrogen through the use of natural gas,'' he said.

District 5 Holstein show is Aug. 4 in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Minn. -- The District 5 Holstein Show is Aug. 4 on the Sibley County fairgrounds in Arlington. The show will be held in conjunction with the annual county fair.

The show will start at 8:30 a.m. Lowell Peterson of Hutchinson will be the show judge.

District 5 includes the counties of Meeker, Wright, Carver, McLeod, Scott, Sibley, Hennepin and Le Sueur.

Soybean Cyst Nematode Summit planned

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council and the University of Minnesota are hosting a regional summit on the use of resistant varieties to manage soybean cyst nematode.

The event will be Sept. 6 from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the Best Western, North Mankato.

The summit is intended for soybean researchers, agronomists, consultants, Extension educators and others who want to understand the "nuts and bolts'' of SCN-resistant varieties.

Space is limited. A $75 registration fee will be charged. The cost includes a meal, handouts and proceedings.

Holstein Twilite meeting at Hamburg Aug. 4

HAMBURG, Minn. -- A Carver County Holstein Twilite meeting will be held Aug. 4 on a farm owned by Andy and Jodene Stuewe. Flower-Brook Registered Holsteins is located just south of Hamburg on Martha Street.

Rolf Feeds will serve a meal from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Judging competition will be held for men, women, boys, girls and teams.

Speakers will include Ted Radintz with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health; Laura Kieser, Carver-Scott ag educator; and Jenny Dingbaum of the Minnesota Holstein Association.

Corn Capital Days set in Olivia July 26-29

OLIVIA, Minn. -- Corn Capital Days are planned July 26-29 in the city of Olivia.

Special events will include a family fun night, a world championship corn toss, corn-lympics, a sweet corn and bean feed, arts and crafts in the park, a grilled porkchop dinner, a dance, and a grand parade.

4-H Market Livestock Sale is Aug. 4

ALBERT LEA, Minn. -- The annual 4-H Market Livestock Sale in Freeborn County will be held Aug. 4 in the Indoor Judging Arena on the fairgrounds. The auction will begin at 9 a.m.

Only market swine, beef, goats and sheep that have been weighed, identified and pre-entered will be eligible for sale.

All 4-H'ers must be present by 8:30 a.m. Saturday in preparation for the sale.

Joerger earns promotion at U of M

ST. PAUL -- Richard Joerger has been appointed systems director for agriculture and business programs with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

He is currently an associate professor at the University of Minnesota.

He will join the system full-time Oct. 1 and will work on a part-time basis until then. Joerger's office will be located in the office of the chancellor in St. Paul.

Song of Hiawatha Pageant set July 27-28

PIPESTONE, Minn. -- Pipestone will host the Song of Hiawatha Pageant July 27-28 and Aug. 3-4.

Native American music will be played in an outdoor ampitheater. The ampitheater is located next to the Pipestone National Monument.

Grain handling publications being offered

The MidWest Plan Service has published a new Grain Handbook package, which includes a bundle of grain drying, storage and handling publications.

North Dakota State University ag engineer Ken Hellevang and University of Minnesota Extension engineer Bill Wilcke co-authored several of the publications in the packet.

"Dry Grain Aeration Systems Design Handbook'' or "Grain Drying, Handling and Storage Handbook'' are both available through MidWest Plan Service. Two other grain-handling booklets are also available.

Gale Frost, State Fair Historian, dead

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Noted Minnesota State Fair historian Gale C. Frost has died from complications from cancer at age 94.

Frost created the popular Minnesota State Fair History Museum in 1976 and served as its curator until 2001. Since then, he held the title of State Fair Historian.

His involvement with the fair started at age 7, when he helped make lemonade for his father's food stands at the Grandstand and old Hippodrome.
