Breakfast on the Farm scheduled June 28

OWATONNA, Minn. -- The Steele County American Dairy Association Breakfast on the Farm is planned June 28 on Ken and Lisa Kern's farm.

"Coffee With the Cows'' begins at 7 a.m. and the pancake breakfast starts at 8 a.m. and continues until noon.

Organizers say there will be barn tours, scavenger hunt, petting zoo, crown-making, pictures with a calf, a pedal tractor obstical course, cheese tasting and more.

Board of Health looks for fencing contractors

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Board of Animal Health is compiling a list of authorized contractors and material suppliers who will install fence in the bovine tuberculoisis Management Zone in northwest Minnesota this summer.

In addition, general deer exclusion fencing specifications have been established and posted on the state's bovine tuberculosis Web site, www.mntbfree.com. Fencing plans that deviate from these guidelines may be approved by the board on a case-by-case basis.

The board will conduct on-farm risk assessments for cattle owners in the management zone. The assessment will determine whether the operation's feed and forage crops are properly protected and whether deer or elk are interacting with cattle.

Contractors and material suppliers interested in being considered for the state's list of approved vendors are asked to call the TB hot-line at 1-877-668-2373.

Day Camp on Dairy Farm set June 11

MAZEPPA, Minn. -- Cow milking and calf feeding will be featured at a Day Camp on a Dairy Farm set for June 11 at Arendt's Holstein Resort in rural Mazeppa.

The camp will run from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. and is for children ages 5 to 12.

Campers will be able to get hands-on experience feeding calves and they can watch cows being milked. Games, crafts and treats, and educational information on cattle and hog production will be featured.

The cost is $5.

Space is limited and campers are asked to pre-register by June 6.

The camp is sponsored by the Wabasha County Farmers Union, the Wabasha County Cattlemen's Association and Wabasha County Pork Producers. For more information, call Dori Klein at (507) 843-4560.

Dinner on the Bluff scheduled June 7

LANESBORO, Minn. -- Eagle Bluff Learning Center near Lanesboro and Cornucopia Art Center in Lanesboro are collaborating on a June 7 Dinner on the Bluff at Eagle Bluff.

Dinner will be served buffet style beginning at 5:30 p.m.

After dinner, several artists will discuss their art. Artists on the schedule include Charlotte Laxen, Sara Lubinski, Erik Pearson, Andrew Chulyk and Preston Lawing.

Bus tour of Wisconsin dairies is June 17-18

TURTLE LAKE, Wis. -- A bus tour of western Wisconsin dairy farmers will be held June 17-18. Dairy producers will have the opportunity to network with their peers and visit dairy farms that are labor efficient, profitable and well-managed.

The Minnesota Extension Service and the Minnesota Milk Producers Association are primary tour sponsors.

The registration deadline is June 5. Registration, which includes transportation, meals, snacks, a hotel stay and an in-depth informational packet is $150 for a single room and $125 per person for a double occupancy.

MMPA also offers a $30 scholarships to each member of the organization.

'Movies Under the Stars' starts May 30

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The History Center of Olmsted County will have a full lineup of "Movies Under the Stars'' this summer at the Historic Stoppel Farmstead.

The first movie HCOC will present is the African Queen, which features Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hephurn, will be May 30 at dusk.

HCOC will show seven other movies this summer. The movie dates are June 13, Raiders of the Lost Ark; June 20, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers; July 11, McClintock; July 18, Some Like It Hot; July 25, My Big Fat Greek Wedding; Aug. 8, E.T.; and Aug. 22, Gone With the Wind.

In case of rain, the movies will be shown indoors in the adjacent museum.

Forums will look at conservation planning

ST. PAUL -- Minnesotans can help shape the future of the state's environment by attending a forum that will focus on the Minnesota Statewide Conservation and Preservation Plan.

A forum will be held May 29 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. in the Continuing Education and Conference Center on the University of Minnesota campus in St. Paull. Another forum is planned June 5 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. in the Best Western, North Mankato.

The plan recommends integrating conservation goals with transportation goals, how alternative energy strategies can increase environmental protection and how can community planning better protect conservation goals.

4-H Regional Camp planned June 16-20

ST. CHARLES, Minn. -- "Finding Your Way'' -- 4-H Regional Camp will be held from June 16-20 in Whitewater State Park, Whitewater.

Youth in grades 4-8 who live in Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona counties are invited to attend 4-H camp.

During camp, campers will be grouped into two age brackets -- grades 6-8 will camp June 16-18 and grades 4-6 will camp June 18-20.

Camp counselors will be high school-aged 4-H members who have been trained for the task. Campers will enjoy swimming, hiking, arts and crafts, educational programs, food, games, campfires and more.

The cost is $65, but scholarships may be available. The registration fee includes meals, lodging for three days and two nights, insurance, supplies, a T-shirt and busing.

DNR presents snake-handling workshops

HOUSTON, Minn. -- The Department of Natural Resources is presenting three June workshops in southeastern Minnesota about living with snakes.

The workshops are planned June 4, 7 p.m. in the Houston Nature Center, Houston; June 5, 7 p.m. in Perkins at Quality Inn, Winona; and June 7, 7 p.m., AmericInn, Caledonia.

Program participants will learn snake identification, how snakes benefit the environment and how to handle a snake encounter with particular attention paid to rattlesnakes.
