Fumigant applicators must have license

Growers who apply fumigants to their own farm-stored grain have had to -- since 2001 -- obtain a Private Pesticide Applicator Fumigation Endorsement for their Private Pesticide Application Certification.

To obtain a private applicator fumigant endorsement, growers need to have a current private applicator license, pass a closed-book exam in the county Extension office and pay a $35 fee.

Call your local Extension office to make an appointment.

International Falls is just plain chilly

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. -- Residents here had a good excuse to add another layer of clothing last month.

That's because International Falls finished with the coldest May-June on record, with an average temperature of 50.5 degrees. That breaks the old record set in 1947 and 1969 with an average temperature of 51.4.

"To have the next (record) a degree off -- that's pretty cold. It's no contest," said state climatologist Pete Boulay.

The May average was 8.2 degrees below normal for International Falls; the June average was 5.6 below normal, according to the National Weather Service.

It was a bit warmer in Duluth the last two months. When Duluth finally reached 80 degrees on Tuesday, it was the longest stretch of below-80-degree temperatures since officials began keeping records at Duluth International Airport in 1941.

'Prairie Baskets' workshop is July 31

ELK RIVER, Minn. -- A "Prairie Baskets Workshop'' is planned July 31 on the Kelley Farm, located near Elk River.

The workshop is geared toward children ages 9 an older. The cost is $15 per basket. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (763) 441-6896.

Bovey issues coin to mark centennial

BOVEY, Minn. -- The Bovey Centennial committee has issued a new centennial commemorative coin, which is being used as a fundraiser for the festival, which is scheduled Sept. 4-6.

The photograph was taken in Bovey in 1918 by Eric Enstrom. The photograph has been featured on cups, cards and all kinds of wall hangings.

The coin has been made in a limited edition of 1,000 and sells for $10, which includes shipping.

For more information, call Brian Carlson at (218) 256-1522.
