Mule, donkey events planned on Smith farm
WINDOM, Minn. -- A two-day training clinic for mule owners is planned Aug. 16-17 on the Dallas Smith farm near Windom. Tim Christopher, a horse and mule trainer, will conduct the clinic.
The clinic is geared for mule owners who are having a problem or two with their animals. Problem horses are also welcome.
The Smith farm will also host a mule and donkey auction on Aug. 18. The sale preview will be at 11 a.m. and the sale will begin at noon.
Tack, quality saddle mules, driving teams and donkeys will be sold. More consignments are welcome. For more information, call (507) 831-5438.
Hanley Falls hosting Pioneer Power show
HANLEY FALLS, Minn. -- The Minnesota Machinery Museum in Hanley Falls will host the 33rd annual Pioneer Power Threshing Show Aug. 11-12.
The event will feature antique tractors and engines, a pedal tractor pull, antique automobiles, a toy show, a craft show, flea market, a daily parade, barrel races, garden tractor pulls, music, homemade ice cream, and lots of demonstrations.

Summit looks at SCN resistant bean varieties
NORTH MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council and the University of Minnesota are hosting a regional summit on the use of resistant varieties to manage soybean cyst nematode.
The summit will be held Sept. 6 from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the Best Western, Mankato.
The summit is intended for soybean researchers, agronomists, consultants, Extension educators and others who want to understand the "nuts and bolts'' of SCN-resistant varieties.
Space is limited. A $75 registration fee includes a meal, handouts and proceedings.
New forage Web site launched by Extension
ST. PAUL -- A new forage Web site has been launched by the University of Minnesota Extension forage team.
The Web site -- www.extension.umn.edu/forages -- highlights current events and programs, research updates, hay auction results and recent publications.
Information is also included on alfalfa, clover, corn silage, economics, establishment, fertility, forage quality, grasses, harvesting and storage, livestock and weed control.
Something new at the Minnesota State Fair
FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- For the first time ever, grand champions from each dairy and beef breed show will compete for the Supreme Champion Beef and Dairy titles at the Minnesota State Fair.
The Supreme Champion awards will be presented by the Minnesota State Fair Foundation 501(c). Supreme Champions will take home a $500 cash prize and banner.
"The Supreme Champion competition gives the exhibitor another opportunity to showcase their best animals,'' said Marie Franzeen-LeFebvre, competition manager for the fair.
The Dairy Supreme Champion will be presented Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. in the Lee and Rose Warner Coliseum and the beef female and bull Supreme champions will be awarded Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. in the Judging Arena.
Donkey, Mule Show scheduled Aug. 19
WINDOM, Minn. -- The Minnesota State Donkey and Mule Show is planned Aug. 19 on the Cottonwood County fairgrounds.
The show will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will run throughout the day. Forty-five classes featuring donkeys and mules will be involved. Halter, performance, driving, jumping and youth classes are scheduled.

Renville County FU Convention is Sept. 6
RENVILLE, Minn. -- The Renville County Farmers Union Convention is scheduled Sept. 6 in Barts Cafe, Renville.
The convention begins at 7 p.m.
MFU vice president Dennis Sjodin will be the guest speaker. MFU field services director Bruce Miller will also be attending.

Brown, Waseca plan FU conventions Sept. 13
NEW ULM, Minn. -- The Brown County Farmers Union Convention and the Waseca County Farmers Union Convention will both be held Sept. 13.
The Brown County Convention will be held at 6 p.m. in the Orchid Inn in Sleepy Eye starting at 6 p.m. MFU president Doug Peterson will be the guest speaker.

Lyon SWCD honors Wichmann for his efforts
BALATON, Minn. -- The Lyon County Soil and Water Conservation District has selected Lynn Wichmann as Outstanding Teacher for 2007.
Wichmann has taught in the Balaton Public School since 1986.
He was chosen based on his educational success and his work with Balaton-area conservation activities. He is a science and social studies teacher.
Muchlinski hired by Lyon SWCS for new post
MARSHALL, Minn. -- The Lyon County Soil and Water Conservation District has hired Jim Muchlinski has education coordinator to serve local schools and community groups. He is also SWCD education coordinator in Yellow Medicine County. He started the shared position in June.
Before being hired by the SWCD, he worked in agricultural and conservation journalism at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton.
Soldiers overseas can get free licenses
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota soldiers returning from service outside the United States in the past two years are eligible for free hunting and fishing licenses from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Returning soldiers, including those who served in the National Guard, may fish and hunt small game without a license for two years from their discharge. They may also obtain one free deer license under regulations passed by the 2007 Legislature.
