Candidates interviewed to lead energy office

DES MOINES -- Gov. Chet Culver is looking for someone to lead his Office of Energy Independence, which was created to wean the state off foreign energy sources.

Culver has begun interviewing 50 candidates -- 39 from Iowa -- who have applied for the job, spokesman Brad Anderson said.

The governor also will name members of the new Iowa Power Fund Board, which will consider projects that apply for part of the state's power fund for research and development of renewable and alternative energy sources. The Legislature approved $100 million over four years to fund the projects.

The director will work with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and public and private partners to develop a plan for reducing the state's consumption of energy, dependence on foreign energy sources, fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.

State issues $3 million in 'Great Places' grants

The money will be divided among 23 projects designed to improve and promote each community.

"This has been an inspiring and rewarding week for Iowa Great Places," said Cyndi Pederson, director for the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. "With the announcement of these grants, we are moving forward with our Great Places partners to achieve their visions for their communities."
