Letter -- Don't trust Davids on eminent domain Tuesday, February 21, 2006
In Agri News' Feb 2nd edition, Rep. Greg Davids had a lengthy comment on the issue of eminent domain. He claims his bills are a bipartisan approach to resolving the problem created in the the recent Kelo v. New London Supreme Court ruling.
Don't believe Gerg Davids.
At the press conference that presented his bill to the public, the frontman for Minnesotans for Eminent Domain was attorney Lee McGrath, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Institute for Justice.
The Institute for Justice is a national right-wing extreminst legal group.
Under the pretense of "liberty" they bring dozens of lawsuits to destroy public education, to dismantle local zoning laws, to break unions and roll back environmental protections.
Their board is full of extremely wealthy right-wing business people. The have very close ties to other right-wing public policy groups like the Heritage Foundation and the CATO Institute.
The problems brought to the public's attention by the Kelo decision can be addressed with specific, narrowly drawn legislation that the League of Minnesota Cities is proposing. If Greg Davids really wanted a bipartisan approach to this issue he would support their suggestions.
Greg Davids is trying to create hysteria around the issue of eminent domain. Because he and his fellow Republican House membes have failed to address Minnesota's problems in health care and education, they are trying to distract and monopolize voters' attention with phony issues like eminent domain and immigration.
You cannot trust Greg Davids.
