Some tax refunds haven't been claimed

MINNEAPOLIS -- The IRS is delivering some early holiday cheer to 1,431 Minnesota taxpayers -- whose names are on a list of people who still have tax refunds coming their way.

The agency on Wednesday released its annual list of taxpayers who haven't received their refunds due to incorrect mailing addresses. The average refund is about $828 per return.

In all, $1,184,224 tax refunds in Minnesota went unclaimed. Nearly half the cash goes to residents of Hennepin and Ramsey counties. In Carver County, 22 people are awaiting tax refunds -- and the average check for them is $2,304.

The number of undeliverable refunds in Minnesota rose about 26 percent over last year.

Vandals deface signs for Amish buggies

CROOKSTON, Minn. -- Vandals have spray painted several yellow road signs cautioning drivers about Amish buggies, leading government officials in northwestern Minnesota to offer a reward in the case.

"It sickens me that someone would do it," Polk County highway engineer Rich Sanders said of the vandalism, which included large red "X" marks. At least one of the four damaged signs had profanity, he said.

The Polk County Commission last week approved a $300 reward to find the vandals.

One of Sanders' crew members investigated the damage, which was mostly reported in a triangle from Winger to Fosston to McIntosh in northwest Minnesota. A large portion of Polk County's Amish community lives in that area.

Winds damage steel-plated storage tank

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. -- The high winds that whipped over the state for the past few days were strong enough to damage a million gallon, steel-plated storage tank in western Minnesota.

The tank, which was damaged Nov. 13, was part of an Otter Tail Ag Enterprises Ethanol Co. ethanol plant under construction near Fergus Falls.

Otter Tail Ag Chief Executive Officer Kelly Longtin said a wind gust "kinked" the side of the tank and pushed it in. He said three men were working at the bottom of the tank, but were not hurt. A damage estimate wasn't available, but Longtin said it won't affect the ethanol plant's startup scheduled for March 1.

Josh Syrjamaki joins congressman's staff

MANKATO, Minn. -- Congressman Tim Walz announced that Minnesota native Josh Syrjamaki is Congressman Tim Waltz' new Chief of Staff.

Syrjamaki previously served as a top aide to the late Sen. Paul Wellstone.

"I'm thrilled to have Josh on board," said Walz. "His years of public service in Minnesota will serve the First Congressional District well. Josh understands the issues that are important to Minnesotans and their families and I am pleased that he will be putting that knowledge to work on my staff. I will benefit greatly from his counsel."

Syrjamaki will join the Walz office in early December.
